A Birthday Party Wrapped Around a Fairy Tale

Donovan Elliot-Smith as Prince Charming, and  Shannon Jennings as Cinderella Credit all Photos Alisa Innocenti Lately, I started to do something I rarely do - watch scary movies. Solely to get me in the mood of Halloween, I sat through the haunted darkness of The Nun, the mayhem of Terror of Hallow’s Eve, The Curse of Crom: The Halloween Story, the eerie, bleakness of The Wind, the spine tingling Before I Wake and the strange Catholic mysticism of The Sentinel.     Today I found the antidote, the remedy and the balance for all this cinematic darkness,   something at the opposite end of the spectral spectrum in the form of . . . drum roll, please, Cinderella.     To help celebrate the tenth birthday of Resonance Works Pittsburgh, I headed down to the studio theater at the Carnegie Library and Music Hall in Carnegie for a staging of Cinderella, an unheralded opera by Pauline Viardot. While the Steelers were getting shellacked at home by t...

Say Hello to Himbos, Say Good Bye to Bimbos

Last evening, I caught a comedy titled "Himbos," at the New Hazlett Theatre on Pittsburgh's North Side.   Took along theater groupie, Iris Holleran, a good choice because Iris has a great sense of humor. She loved the show as did I, though not quite as much as she did. Playwright Brian Pope creates a male version of Hooters in which all the waiters and staff are scantily clad, but tastefully so. No nudity here.   The over-the-top antics of the actors were hilarious. In the post-show discussion, the cast were so articulate and discussed the comedy intelligently, all the while maintaining awry   sense of humor.   There's one more showing this evening, so, if you want to chuckle and laugh, get a little levity in your life, Himbos is a good remedy. Thanks to Iris for pointing out the adaptation of the word Bimbos into the comedy's clever title Himbos.

A Conversation with the Actors in The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk

Zanny Laird as Bella and Dan Mayhak as Marc Credit Jason Snyder     For its landmark 100th production, Quantum Theatre has selected a timely staging of a work about the love and artistic life of Marc Chagall and his wife, Bella, a poet and writer.     I use the word timely because the Chagalls lived, loved and worked through some tumultuous times, including Russian pogroms against the Jews in their native town of Vitebsk (Belarus), the Russian Revolution and both World Wars. They experienced war and political upheaval, much like what’s currently plaguing the world of today in the Ukraine and Gaza.     Referencing the couple’s Russian-Jewish heritage, which made its way into Chagall’s paintings, the production features Klezmer music written by Daniel Jamieson and Ian Ross. and includes and whimsical sets by scenic designer Stephanie Mayer-Staley, in which Marc and Bella are the picture of a head-over-heels romance, floating over a...
