Staged downtown at One Oxford Centre
Enron isn’t just a play — it’s a high-octane look into the
glittering freefall of American capitalism. A surprising and exhilarating
dramatization of the real-life financial scandal, Enron uses political satire,
dazzling multimedia, innovative staging, and more to transport audiences back
to the sexy 1990s. Staged above the city in the retro-cool Oxford Centre, this
production offers a wild ride with characters you’ll remember from corporate
infamy: Jeff Skilling, Andy Fastow, and that Southern charmer Ken Lay.
Playwright Lucy Prebble’s Enron premiered at the Chichester
Festival Theatre and continued on to a sell-out run at the Royal Court before
transferring to London’s West End, and eventually to Broadway.
Prebble is just the modern-day Cassandra to give audiences
this biting satire of suits and spreadsheets. She’s an accomplished writer for
film, television, and theatre, who served as Executive Producer and writer on
the BAFTA, Golden Globe, and three-time Emmy award-winning HBO drama
Succession. Recent theatre credits include her award-winning play, The Effect,
at the National Theatre, directed by Jamie Lloyd.
Quantum’s cast of 14 is led by director Kyle Haden. Haden is well-known to Pittsburgh theatre lovers. Quantum regulars may recognize him for his roles in Chimerica (2021) and Inside Passage (2018), and most recently for directorial debut with Quantum’s The Devil Is A Lie (2023) – a story which also explored themes of power, deception, and the cost of selling one’s soul. By day, Haden serves as an assistant professor of acting and the senior associate head of the school of drama at Carnegie Mellon University.
“From the Frick Building to Oxford Centre, I feel at home
downtown with Quantum Theatre," shares Haden. “Ripped from the 90s
headlines and studied in business schools across the country, you’ve heard
about the downfall of Enron. This production is just as big as the scandal
behind the corporation with a large cast, highly creative scenic and lighting
designs, and innovative video projections. Just like Enron’s infamous
advertising campaign, the show will leave audiences ‘asking why.’”
Leading the cast is Joe McGranaghan as Jeffrey Skilling,
risk taker, ringleader, and CEO of Enron. With a Darwinian view of what makes
the world work, Skilling believed that money and fear were the only things that
motivated people. Quantum audiences will remember McGranaghan’s iconic
performance in King Lear (2019) and The Task (2010). Other theatre credits
include Hamlet: What Dreams… with The Brick; The Bald Soprano with Hudson
Warehouse; Project Amelia with Bricolage Production Co; Encore! national tour
with Chamber Theatre of Boston; and It’s a Wonderful Life with Baltimore
CenterStage among so many others.
Starring alongside McGranaghan, John Michnya steps into the
role of Andy Fastow, Skilling’s protege who rose through the ranks to become
the company’s CFO. Fastow’s morally bankrupt financial machinations formed the
basis of corruption that made the company infamous. Michnya’s theatre credits
with Quantum include Chimerica (2021), Constellations (2020), and Love &
Information (2020).
As the lone female lead, Christine Weber will portray
Claudia Roe – a fictional character created by the brilliant mind of Lucy
Prebble – who goes head-to-head with Skilling for the position of CEO. Quantum
audiences were first introduced to Weber in The Devil is a Lie (2023). Other
theatre credits include Love Labor’s Lost with American Players and Emma with
Guthrie Theater.
Straight from Quantum’s season opener, Seagull, Ken Bolden
brings undeniable charisma to the role of Ken Lay, Enron's charming, ultimately
notorious founder. His other recent work includes Dial M for Murder (Public
Theatre); co-producing WITCH (Carnegie Stages); and the upcoming film, Hershey
(George Cadbury).
The ensemble also features Amy Landis, Isaac Miller, Jose
Perez IV, Jamie Agnello, Parag Gohel, and Tru Verret-Flemming alongside Attack
Theatre company dancers: Isabella Bergamin, Anya Epstein, Jax RF McAtee, Will
VanSlander.
Enron is presented in collaboration with Attack Theatre. Founded in 1994 by Michele de la Reza and Peter Kope as a collaboration between two dancers and a city, Attack Theatre creates work at the intersection of art and community, resulting in productions that are personal, authentic, welcoming, and fearless. Working alongside Haden, the duo’s choreography is integral to the play's unique, stylized storytelling.
The creative team includes Scenic Designer Sasha Schwartz,
Costume Designer Damian E. Dominguez, Lighting Designer C. Todd Brown,
Projection Designer Kolton Cotton, and Sound Designer Stewart Blackwood.
