"Andrew Paul directed a literal kinetic production as the actors raced around the stage....There are a lot of versions of “A Christmas Carol” throughout Pittsburgh right now. They are popping up like children pouring out of Mother Ginger’s skirt in “The Nutcracker,” but twisted mystery in “A Sherlock Carol” is a gas.

"Whalen is Pittsburgh’s Sherlock Holmes. This reviewer can’t imagine anyone else in the role. He excels as Sherlock. He has the magnetism, the boldness, the arrogance, the intelligence. Whalen is able to create a fully-realized version of the character.
Simon Bradbury plays Watson, Inspector Lestrade (the bumbling Scotland Yard detective), and Joe Brackenridge. He makes each character distinct and unique."
--Michael Buzzelli, 'Burgh Vivant
"There is a Christmas play in Pittsburgh that ought to be seen before its too-brief run ends.

"You’ll laugh. You may be moved to tears. You’ll be transported by the artistry of the actors. The whole thing comes together with such brilliance that by the end, the only possible question is: How come nobody thought of this before?

"And while the policy of this reviewer is never to call any show a must-see, you might guess, from the gushing expressed above, that in this case I’ve been tempted to make an exception."
--Mike Vargo, Entertainment Central Pittsburgh
"At this time of year, you would think I'd be worn out on A Christmas Carol, and I had genuinely expected to be. But Andrew Paul and his kinetic Kinetic cast won me over and restored a sense of the Christmas spirit and childlike wonder in me, just as Scrooge did for Holmes in the play.

Could A Sherlock Carol become Pittsburgh's latest theatrical tradition? It very well could, and I'd be more than happy to see these people, and these characters, again next year."

A SHERLOCK CAROL
by Mark Shanahan

December 11-21, 2025

Carnegie Stage, 25 W. Main Street in Carnegie

Pittsburgh Premiere, directed by Andrew Paul & starring David Whalen as Sherlock Holmes

Also featuring Simon Bradbury, James Fitzgerald, Mackenzie Heidenreich, Joseph McGranaghan, Susie McGregor-Laine, & Caroline Nicolian

Music arranged by Douglas Levine and performed by Douglas Levine & Cara Garofalo

“A clever, crowd-pleasing holiday comedy!”
- The New York Times (Critic’s Pick)

TWO BELOVED CLASSIC TALES. ONE THRILLING NEW MYSTERY.

Moriarty is dead, to begin with. And Sherlock Holmes is a haunted man. But, when a grown-up Tiny Tim asks Holmes to investigate the death of Ebeneezer Scrooge, the Great Detective must use his gifts to solve a Dickens of a Christmas mystery!

A hit off-Broadway and in London, Mark Shanahan’s A Sherlock Carol hits all the right notes, seamlessly melding Charles Dickens’ very familiar A Christmas Carol with a comparatively minor Conan Doyle story, The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle. Seven actors take on the beloved characters in this heartwarming and highly theatrical holiday treat for the whole family!

Sanctified Explores Through Music How Diverse Attitudes are Transformed into an Inspired Unity

Marissa Lily, Mils James, Manny Walker, Emir Hardy, Chuck Timbers, Cheryl El Walker, Katy Cotten & Brenda Marks Set by Mark Clayton Southers Credit all Photos: Kim El One of the many things live theater does well is taking its audience to different places, times and moods through the power of story-telling. While this is a fairly obvious observation, this thought became especially poignant when, over a period of less than 24 hours, when I found myself on board a battleship in late 18 th century Portsmouth, England, then, 17 hours later, walking into a small Black church in rural South Carolina in the present day. The vehicles for this geographic time travel to places and times worlds apart were Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera, “H.M. S. Pinafore” and playwright Javon Johnson’s “Sanctified.” Both works, while musical comedies with morals to the story, came from diverse and rich cultural backgrounds. I’ve already published my review of Pinafore on my arts and enterta...

Mon Valley Fans of Live Theater Get a Sumptuous Taste of Future Possibilities

The Cast of "What Do I Wear, 2,500 Tears of Fashion in Theatre" Credit all Photos: Kelly Tunney     The Mon Valley YMCA in Monongahela never looked so festive, so blatantly celebratory, as on the evening of April 13 when a troupe of 16 actors arrived with a trailer full of colorful costumes, many of which were quite elaborate.     The audience barely understood the full depth of the dazzle that awaited them as they took their seats for an event exuberantly titled “What Do I Wear, 2,5000 Years of Fashion in Theatre.”     The fundraiser for Pittsburgh International Classic Theatre was the brainchild of PICT’s artistic director, Elizabeth Elias Huffman. Elizabeth Huffman at the Podium     Huffman conceived of an idea that called for choosing selections from plays that started with the era of the ancient Greeks, marched on through Elizabethan England and Shakespeare, popped in on Restoration England via an American playwright,...
