Poetry Unplugged: Still Dreaming! marks the 10th anniversary of Poetry Unplugged at AWAACC, a milestone celebration honoring the life, legacy, and enduring vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Curated and hosted by Orlando Watson, this powerful evening brings together Pennsylvania’s most compelling poetic voices alongside a special appearance by GRAMMY-nominated songwriter Khemist Mayfield, whose lyricism blurs the line between poetry and music. Joining him on stage are some of Pittsburgh’s most electrifying poets: Diarra Imani, Thembisile Gxuluwe, Devantae Butler, Leslie Ezra Smith, Shockie G, and Mike Smalls, AWAACC’s 2025 Century Cycle Poetry Slam Champion.

Setting the sonic atmosphere is Selecta, a viral Twitch DJ known for genre-blending sets that amplify the energy of every room, spinning throughout the evening and into the after-party and open mic following the performance.

We uphold the legacy of August Wilson by presenting extraordinary work of artists and storytellers of the African Diaspora, for all to enjoy. We educate people of all ages about the history of Black arts and culture. We inspire the next generation to understand that their stories matter.

Sanctified Explores Through Music How Diverse Attitudes are Transformed into an Inspired Unity

While this is a fairly obvious observation, this thought became especially poignant when, over a period of less than 24 hours, when I found myself on board a battleship in late 18 th century Portsmouth, England, then, 17 hours later, walking into a small Black church in rural South Carolina in the present day. The vehicles for this geographic time travel to places and times worlds apart were Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera, “H.M. S.
