Wine or Sparkling Soda Directed and adapted by Elizabeth Elias Huffman, A Winter’s Tale is a late play of Shakespeare’s, a tragic/comedy. Set in the first half in the dangerous world of 1920’s Sicily, the action travels sixteen years later to a decadent nightclub in Bohemia where they are celebrating the sheep shearing festival in 1936 on the eve of World War II. This concept staged reading is performed in both English and Italian. ABOUT THE PLAY Don Leontes and his wife, Hermione, have been hosting Leontes’s childhood friend, Polixenes of Bohemia. After a nine-month stay, Polixenes prepares to return home—despite Leontes’s urgent pleas that he remain in Sicily for a little while longer. When Hermione effortlessly persuades Polixenes to extend his visit, Leontes is seized by a sudden, unfounded suspicion that his wife and closest friend have betrayed him. What begins as a fleeting doubt erupts into obsessive jealousy. Deaf to the warnings of his trusted consigliere, Camillo, Leontes allows paranoia to rule his judgment, unraveling his marriage, shattering lifelong friendships, and destabilizing his family and political empire. Reimagined through the lens of organized power and looming global conflict, Shakespeare’s tragicomedy explores the corrosive force of jealousy, the fragility of status, and the devastating cost of unchecked authority—before ultimately offering redemption and the enduring triumph of love.  DONATE  See you at Carnegie Stage this May!
