Spotlight Radio Show: Jazz Appreciation Month JAM Institutions

This week on MCG Jazz Spotlight Show, we revisit a special Jazz Appreciation Month program, taking a look at the institutions that keep this music alive, evolving, and swinging night after night.

We’ll start out west with the SFJAZZ Collective and their take on “Vicissitude,” then settle into the unmistakable sound of Kenny Burrell with “Sophisticated Lady.” From there, it’s a stop in Detroit with the Mack Avenue SuperBand and the groove-driven “Soul Sister,” before heading into the rich, New Orleans spirit of Dr. John on “I’m Just a Lucky So and So.”

You’ll hear the enduring voice of Duke Ellington woven throughout the program, alongside Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with “That’s When All Will See.” We’ll also spend some time with the Contemporary Piano Ensemble on “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” and the Diva Jazz Orchestra bringing their signature energy to “What the World Needs Now.”

In the second half, Sean Jones takes us into more modern territory with “Piscean Dichotomy,” and we’ll close things out with Paquito D’Rivera on Jobim’s “Modinha,” from Brazilian Dreamsthe Grammy Award-winning MCG Jazz release featuring New York Voices. In fact, much of that music was back on our stage just last weekend when Paquito and New York Voices brought it to life right here in Pittsburgh.

It’s a full hour that moves across the country—and across generations—highlighting the presenters, educators, and cultural homes that continue to support this music and the artists who carry it forward.

Mark Jackovic - Saxophone

212 Stories is a dance event inspired by the rich history of the building (212 45th Street) that Attack Theatre now calls home. A former YMCA and Pittsburgh Boys Club from the early 1900s—this building becomes both the venue and the impetus for a world-premiere performance that honors the stories that have echoed through its halls for over a century. This production will feature original live music and jazz standards as the soundscore for the decades.

In a space once filled with the energy of young learners, playing and growing; a gym for dancing and dating, and a basement of boxing and bowling; we now learn, move, connect, and create. Through 212 Stories we invite you to experience how the stories of the past and the new ones we are building—through dance and music—can transform a space and bring a community together.

All tickets for this event are through Attack Theatre. They can be reached at (412)-281-3305 or contact@attacktheatre.com.

Force of Nature: Jazz with Spirit, Swing, and Soul

This week for Jazz Appreciation Month, MCG Jazz spotlights Force of Nature, pianist/composer Deanna Witkowski’s seventh album and a profound artistic statement inspired by the music and legacy of Mary Lou Williams, often called “The First Lady of Jazz.”

The album showcases Witkowski’s expansive musicianship and reconnects modern audiences with Williams’s forward‑thinking, experimental compositions.

Featuring an exceptional ensemble — Clay Jenkins, Daniel Foose, Scott Latzky, Dwayne Dolphin, and Roger Humphries — Force of Nature is both a celebration of jazz history and a deeply personal reflection of Witkowski’s twenty‑year immersion in Williams’s life, music, and spiritual vision.

Honor the spirit.

Feel the power.

Own the music.

Sanctified Explores Through Music How Diverse Attitudes are Transformed into an Inspired Unity

Marissa Lily, Mils James, Manny Walker, Emir Hardy, Chuck Timbers, Cheryl El Walker, Katy Cotten & Brenda Marks Set by Mark Clayton Southers Credit all Photos: Kim El One of the many things live theater does well is taking its audience to different places, times and moods through the power of story-telling. While this is a fairly obvious observation, this thought became especially poignant when, over a period of less than 24 hours, when I found myself on board a battleship in late 18 th century Portsmouth, England, then, 17 hours later, walking into a small Black church in rural South Carolina in the present day. The vehicles for this geographic time travel to places and times worlds apart were Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera, “H.M. S. Pinafore” and playwright Javon Johnson’s “Sanctified.” Both works, while musical comedies with morals to the story, came from diverse and rich cultural backgrounds. I’ve already published my review of Pinafore on my arts and enterta...

Mon Valley Fans of Live Theater Get a Sumptuous Taste of Future Possibilities

The Cast of "What Do I Wear, 2,500 Tears of Fashion in Theatre" Credit all Photos: Kelly Tunney     The Mon Valley YMCA in Monongahela never looked so festive, so blatantly celebratory, as on the evening of April 13 when a troupe of 16 actors arrived with a trailer full of colorful costumes, many of which were quite elaborate.     The audience barely understood the full depth of the dazzle that awaited them as they took their seats for an event exuberantly titled “What Do I Wear, 2,5000 Years of Fashion in Theatre.”     The fundraiser for Pittsburgh International Classic Theatre was the brainchild of PICT’s artistic director, Elizabeth Elias Huffman. Elizabeth Huffman at the Podium     Huffman conceived of an idea that called for choosing selections from plays that started with the era of the ancient Greeks, marched on through Elizabethan England and Shakespeare, popped in on Restoration England via an American playwright,...
