This week on MCG Jazz Spotlight Show, we revisit a special Jazz Appreciation Month program, taking a look at the institutions that keep this music alive, evolving, and swinging night after night.
We’ll start out west with the SFJAZZ Collective and their take on “Vicissitude,” then settle into the unmistakable sound of Kenny Burrell with “Sophisticated Lady.” From there, it’s a stop in Detroit with the Mack Avenue SuperBand and the groove-driven “Soul Sister,” before heading into the rich, New Orleans spirit of Dr. John on “I’m Just a Lucky So and So.”
You’ll hear the enduring voice of Duke Ellington woven throughout the program, alongside Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with “That’s When All Will See.” We’ll also spend some time with the Contemporary Piano Ensemble on “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” and the Diva Jazz Orchestra bringing their signature energy to “What the World Needs Now.”
In the second half, Sean Jones takes us into more modern territory with “Piscean Dichotomy,” and we’ll close things out with Paquito D’Rivera on Jobim’s “Modinha,” from Brazilian Dreams—the Grammy Award-winning MCG Jazz release featuring New York Voices. In fact, much of that music was back on our stage just last weekend when Paquito and New York Voices brought it to life right here in Pittsburgh.
It’s a full hour that moves across the country—and across generations—highlighting the presenters, educators, and cultural homes that continue to support this music and the artists who carry it forward. |
