Film Screening: My Rembrandt

Sunday, March 3, 11 a.m.

Set in the world of the Old Masters, this documentary offers a mosaic of gripping stories in which unrestrained passion for Rembrandt van Rijn’s paintings leads to dramatic developments and unexpected plot turns. A brief talk about the 1658 Self-Portrait by Rembrandt that is one of the Frick Collection works in the exhibition will begin the program.

Lecture Program: Rembrandt: The Man and the Myth

Sunday, March 3, 2 p.m.

Make a day of it by sticking around after the film screening for a 2 p.m. lecture about the artist’s life led by art historian Kahren Jones Arbitman, Ph.D. Dr. Arbitman will attempt to refute the myths, lay out the facts, and present Rembrandt van Rijn as a man of prodigious talent who lived according to his own lights and suffered the consequences, from his earliest years until his death.

See awe-inspiring masterworks, including works by Titian, Rembrandt, Monet, Degas, Whistler, El Greco, Ingres, and Vermeer at the Frick Art Museum as we explore the Frick family’s art collecting legacy.

While this is a fairly obvious observation, this thought became especially poignant when, over a period of less than 24 hours, when I found myself on board a battleship in late 18 th century Portsmouth, England, then, 17 hours later, walking into a small Black church in rural South Carolina in the present day. The vehicles for this geographic time travel to places and times worlds apart were Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera, “H.M. S. Pinafore” and playwright Javon Johnson’s “Sanctified.” Both works, while musical comedies with morals to the story, came from diverse and rich cultural backgrounds.
