As we round out our 117th season and look toward the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh’s next chapter, I keep returning to a simple idea: a city that sings is a city that connects.
I felt that idea in action while listening to the Mendelssohn Choir perform at Heinz Hall this past weekend. As the final verses of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms state, "Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell together in unity," I felt a deep sense of connection to the audience members next to me, to the community of singers on stage, and to a whole citizenry searching for belonging.
This feeling of connection is at the heart of everything we do. For more than a century, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh has brought people together to sing, listen, and discover something larger than themselves. I saw it in action at our audition workshop, I feel it every week in rehearsals, and it defines our CrosSING Bridges series.
As we imagine MCP’s next chapter, we want to take this idea further. Through our strategic planning process and conversations with singers, board members, and community partners, one idea has continued to rise to the surface: the Mendelssohn Choir has an opportunity to be a beacon for choral singing throughout our region.
We want to expand on the excellence and tradition that define this organization while opening the circle wider to create more opportunities for people to experience the joy, connection, and belonging that come from singing together. Our 2026–27 Season is reflection of this vision and we are excited to continue building toward an even more connected future in the years ahead. |
