Somerset County to Host Five Days of Community Events Honoring America's 250th Anniversary and the 25th Anniversary of Flight 93

 


Somerset County will serve as the backdrop for a week of remembrance, patriotism, and community celebration as residents and visitors gather for five days of special events commemorating two historic milestones: America's 250th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the Events at Flight 93.

From Wednesday, August 5, through Sunday, August 9, community organizations, first responders, musicians, and volunteers have partnered to present a series of events honoring the courage, sacrifice, and unity that define Somerset County and the nation.

The schedule includes concerts, family activities, historical exhibits, musical performances, and also tributes to the brave volunteers who have served our area and our country. Unless otherwise noted, all events are free and open to the public.

Event Schedule

Wednesday, August 5

6:00 p.m. – Opening Ceremony Somerset Area High School Athletic Field

The week begins with a patriotic opening ceremony featuring:

•

Laurel Highlands Chorale

•

Military flyover

•

Unveiling of historic American flag from the Daughters of the American Revolution by local Boy Scouts

•

Combined community bands representing Somerset, Forest Hills, and Johnstown

•

U.S. Air Force Strolling Strings Ensemble

•

United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Team

In the event of inclement weather, performances will be moved to the Somerset Area High School Auditorium and Gymnasium.

Thursday, August 6

10:30 a.m. Pennsylvania Fallen Firefighter Memorial Dedication Remember Me Rose Garden

TBD – p.m. United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Team Performance Wall of Names, Flight 93 National Memorial

6:00 p.m. – Bands for the Brave Lawn at the Laurel Arts Dressler Center Hosted by Laurel Arts and the Somerset Regional Volunteer Fire Department

Enjoy an evening of music and community featuring:

Food trucks

•

Beer wagon

•

Performances by Somerset County singer-songwriter Allison Borek and Fret Buzz

•

Headline concert by The Commonheart

•

Special guest appearance by former Steeler, Brett Kiesel (photos, no autographs)

•

Special 9/11 exhibit inside the Dressler Center (available throughout the week)

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, arrive early, and utilize event parking and shuttle from the Somerset Area High School Athletic Field. In the event of inclement weather, music and vendors will move to the Somerset Regional Volunteer Fire Department.

Friday, August 7

1:00–9:00 p.m. – First Friday Somerset Historical Center

Activities include:

Food trucks

“Somerset County Called to Action” Exhibit about Flight 93

•

Museum and grounds tours

•

Family and children's entertainment

4:45 p.m. Music on the Lawn featuring local favorite John Larimer

6:00 p.m. Hickory Bottom Band (Bluegrass)

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and coolers with beverages of their choice.

Saturday, August 8

Family and children's activities at Union Street Playground

3:00 p.m. Western Pennsylvania Firefighters Association Parade throughout Uptown Somerset

Musical performances by Dopamine and Indirect Reflect plus family activities and concessions Somerset Area High School Athletic Field

9:00 p.m.

The celebration concludes with a spectacular drone show and fireworks launched from Somerset Area High School

Sunday, August 9

These commemorative events celebrate the enduring spirit of America while honoring the extraordinary courage and sacrifice demonstrated on September 11, 2001. Community members and visitors alike are invited to come together in remembrance, gratitude, and celebration of the values that continue to unite our nation.
