Science of Speed, Powered by Lenovo, Celebrates a Fast Start at Kamin Science Center

One month in and Pittsburgh is proving it’s ready to put the pedal to the metal.

Since opening Aug. 1, Science of Speed, Powered by Lenovo, at Kamin Science Center has welcomed nearly 10,000 visitors, with 90% of racing experiences selling out through the first month of operations.

The 21,000-square-foot immersive experience puts visitors in the driver’s seat while exploring the STEM concepts that make racing possible — from traction and aerodynamics to energy transfer, momentum, data analytics, and human performance.

Science of Speed features:

A multi-level, all-electric kart track with elevation changes, hairpin turns, and head-to-head racing.
Five immersive racing simulators, including the WAVE Italy Formula 1 Motion Simulator — the only simulator of its kind in Western Pennsylvania — and four interconnected SimGear racing simulators.
Hands-on STEM exhibits exploring engineering, aerodynamics, materials science, energy transfer, data analytics, and human performance.
Rare racing artifacts, including the legendary 1959 race car Ol’ Yaller, an exploded-engine Audi R8, a Ducati racing motorcycle, and a racing suit signed by MotoGP World Champion Marc Márquez.
The Pit Stop lounge, a mezzanine-level social destination overlooking the track, offering food, drinks, and views of the action.

During the day, kart racing inside Science of Speed is available for visitors 13+ who meet the required height and safety requirements (55-78” tall with a maximum weight of 300 pounds).

On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, the experience transforms into an adults-only destination featuring higher-speed racing, immersive simulators, food, drinks, and a lively social atmosphere.

One Month Down. Full Speed Ahead.

The strong first-month response comes as Kamin Science Center continues its transformation as the most visited museum in the region.

Fueled by a historic $65 million gift from Dan and Carole Kamin and their family, Kamin Science Center is reimagining more than 75% of its exhibition spaces over the next two years.

Science of Speed, Powered by Lenovo, represents one of the largest milestones in that transformation, bringing together entertainment, technology, and hands-on learning in an experience designed to make science something visitors can see, feel, and experience.

With racing experiences continuing to be popular, visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and reserve their racing time online.
